From the Desk of Jim Norman
He’s been called Yoda, coach and a renaissance man.

One thing’s for sure; he can grab life with both hands and squeeze more out of it in a day than most people experience in a lifetime.

Being a rabid autodidact from an early age, he’s developed a style of learning that allows him to absorb subjects faster and more deeply on his own than would be possible academically– even though he was labeled learning disabled in grade school. It’s this style of deep learning that also makes him an excellent teacher and coach.

Sought after as a business coach, skills coach, business optimization consultant, and life strategist, his students swear by his teaching method, unique perspective, and ability to relate complex subjects to each student in a way that resonates with them personally.
As one of his students put it:

I learned more and got a deeper understanding of movement and defense after half an hour of boxing instruction with Jim than I got after two years with my current boxing coach… and he was formerly on the Canadian Olympic boxing team!

Going the extra mile for his students (sometimes literally) also separates him from other elite-level teachers and coaches.

A good example was after knee reconstruction to replace his blown ACL with a tendon from a donor. Grateful for the donation, Jim decided to write the family a letter to give them an idea of who was receiving the donated graft, and what he was like as a person, hoping the personal information would lessen their grief.

Always seeing things from a unique perspective, Jim realized what you say about yourself isn’t as impactful as what others think of you, so he enlisted his mountain biking students to write their thoughts about his impact on them to be included in the donor letter.

Here are two examples:
Dear Donor Family,

First let me say that I am sorry for your family’s loss, which ultimately resulted in your tissue donation for Jim. Jim is an active 60-year old mountain biker and coach for our ragtag group of dirt riders. His skill in riding and teaching is the glue that holds our little band together. His selflessness makes him a worthy recipient of such a gift.

Recently, when I broke my leg on a ride, Jim immediately figured out how to get me out without requiring a med-evac helicopter ride. He got me on my bike and pushed me and the bike up out of a gully (with his own recently torn ACL and a swollen knee), and managed to guide and push me out of the preserve on the bike. His knee did not feel so good for a while after that, but that is the kind of guy who is the recipient of your family’s tissue gift. He is always there with teaching tips or bike repairs for the rest of us. I hope that there is some measure of comfort in knowing your tissue gift will be well used in Jim’s riding and coaching, and is appreciated by a wider group than just Jim and his partner Sandy.

Thank you again.

When I first met Jim, his ability to ride a mountain bike over anything and everything intrigued me. After I rode flat, unchallenging terrain for years and became burned out on cycling, I decided to give Jim a call. I knew he was an excellent skills coach. It turns out that I am learning more than bike skills!

I thought the hardest part of technical riding would be actually learning the skills. The manuals and pedal kicks, the wheelie drop, riding up stairs and down steep granite boulders… all of the things that look cool and are fun to do. It turns out the actual skills are easy to learn. The hard part is conquering the brain.

Jim has helped me master fear and self-doubt. Funny thing, the mental skills that I have learned also spill into everyday life.

Have a plan and plan for success and you will achieve it. Not just hopping onto boulders and dropping off benches, but starting a new career and always pushing my comfort zone.

Jim is happiest on the bike helping us all be better riders and in turn better humans. The gift of your loved one’s ACL will allow Jim to continue doing what he does best.

His skills and unique methods are a product of battling a previously unknown disorder:
Living most of his life with undiagnosed high-spectrum Asperger’s syndrome initially kept him feeling like an outcast in school from both his classmates and teachers. He’s admitted his early school experience was “a dark, uncomfortable place”. But instead of retreating into seclusion; it was this dark time that motivated him to analyze difficult situations and develop strategies to “make up lost ground”, and master the troubling times that most of the “normal” kids continued to struggle with.

Although he’s worked with people with disabilities, most of the requests for help come from “normal” people wanting strategies to deal with their fears and stumbling blocks, both personal and professional.

It wasn’t long before he realized:
“If I keep answering the same questions– why not write a book which will help far more people?”

The result was in the form of his first two books:
Your Fearless mind
And
Fearless mountain biking

Both are far from passive reads: exercises, challenges and deep introspection take up much of Your Fearless mind, and Fearless mountain biking is not only instructional, but also emphasizes the efficiency of learning something once, and finding the parallels in life that will benefit from the new skill.
